A Minute Past Three

This is a picture of typical trench where soldiers spent their days and nights.

1. Who is Captain Wilkie? How is he different from Sergeant Hanley? (p.120)

2. Is the war going well for the soldiers? How do you know this?

3. What problems were there in the trenches?

4. Anna, the girl from the estaminet, reminds Tommo of Molly. Write about a time when you saw someone who reminded you of a person you know.  Tell what it was about that person (not just looks) that reminded you of them.

  1. 1. Captain Wilkie is the captain, and he is different from Sergeant Hanley because Sergeant Hanley is the one that picks on charlie and is now starting to pick on tommo.

2.The war is not going well for the soldiers because hanley is mean to charlie and tommo.

    3. The people were making them dig the trenches in a straight line, which makes it easier for the enemy to hit them because normally they shoot get in the trench and then have to aim there gun to make sure they get it in to the next part of the trench.

    4. I can't really think of any one that has reminded me of someone that i know and not just because of their looks.

No the war is not going good because there making a lot of trenches and people are dying.
The problems were that they were making trenches straight ,but not curvy
I don’t really have anyone that reminded me of someone I would say my cousin looked like a friend of mine because my cousin was very kind and shy.

  4. 1) Sargent Wilkie was kinder than Hanley, who treated Tommo and Charlie terribly.

    2) Not too much, the Germans captured Belgium and are charging forward and are killing and wounding the opposing soldiers.

    3) Rats, trench foot and numerous other problems.

    4) I was once walking in a store and saw a coconut in the product isle and it reminded me if Faith, who I am going to bonk on the head with a coconut.

Captain Wilkie is different from Sergeant Hanley because Captain Wilkie is nicer than Sergeant Hanley and because Captain Wilkie encourages others and doesn't put people down.

The war is not going well for the soldiers. I know that because it said in the book and they are digging straight trenches and that makes it very easy for the enemies to shoot right down the trenches and kill everybody in the bullet's path.

Problems in the trenches were the trenches are dug straight so it's easy to shoot cannons into it and blow people up. Another problem with the trenches are since they are dug straight the enemies can shoot straight down the trench and kill everybody down the trench in a couple seconds or minutes.

My friend Hannah reminded me of my friend in surry that was named Sara. She reminded me of Sara from her looks and because she really likes to go swimming.

  6. 1. Who is Captain Wilkie? How is he different from Sergeant Hanley? (p.120)
He is the captain of the army and yes he is different from Sergeant Hanly because he got shot in the leg and Charlie cared about him.
    2. Is the war going well for the soldiers? How do you know this?
No the war is not going well for the soldiers. Tommo and Charlie and others were getting shot after kidnapping a german.
    3. What problems were there in the trenches?
There are rats and lice and a sickness that goes in your lungs.
    4. Anna, the girl from the estaminet, reminds Tommo of Molly. Write about a time when you saw someone who reminded you of a person you know. Tell what it was about that person (not just looks) that reminded you of them. An old man was walking and he reminded me of my Grampa.

  7. Captain Wilkie went to war with the group of people that sergeant hanley trained. Wilkie is different because he's trying to make them happy and wants them to smile.
I think it's going well because they got a prisoner from the germans and they almost died but pretended to be dead so they were safe.
It's really muddy and there rats and lice that stick to there bodies.
People say I look like Paige from class but i don't.

  8. 1. Captain Wilkie is a leader to the soldiers and he is different than Sergeant Hanley because he encourages them and doesn’t dislike Charlie or Tommo.

    2. The war is not going well for the soldiers because many are dying, and they are making the mistake of digging their trenches straight so enemies could easily attack.

    3. The problems were that they were digging it straight, lice, rats, and there were many more.

4 My sisters friend from university reminds me of her because she acts like her, likes the same things and does the same classes.

  10. aptain Wilkie is a friendly leader of the war team. He is different from Sergeant Hanley because Hanley is a mean and rude person and Wilkie is nice and calm.

War is going well because currently no attacks had been made until they kidnapped a German to gather information from him.

The problems in the trenches are that there are lots of rats, lice, and all of their boots are covered in mud, which affects how they move because they the mud on their boots might get stuck to the ground.

When I look at friend Darren, he reminds me of my mom. Darren is a funny person , and my mom is the exact same as him, but my own mom, not a friend.

  11. Captain Wilkie is different because he is nicer than Horrible Hanley because he lets the soldiers sing and be cheerful while Hanely acts like a bully and is very mean.

I think the war is going pretty equally right now, but if I had to say if someone was winning it would probably be us because it said in the book.

Some of the problems in the trenches were the living conditions, unsanitary, rats and trench foot which you got from mud.

I was at my brother’s boarding school to pick up my brother and one of his friends was in the other room playing music that I thought sounded like something my brother would listen and he was about my brother’s height he also had about the same voice so I thought about my brother as soon as I saw him.

  12. Captain Wilkie is more friendly and he lets them sing. Sergeant Hanley (Horrible Hanley) is very mean and makes them do a lot more work.

I think the war is going well so far but, it was a very unsanitary place.

Some problems in the trenches are that it is very muddy and you can get trenches foot. Also there was lice you could get not just on your head but all over your body and there was rats all over the place.

I remember when my dad and I were power walking, there was this guy wearing the same colour clothes and he was power walking too. So, when I bent down to tie my shoe the guy caught up to me and I started walking with him because I thought he was my dad. When I asked him a question starting with “dad”, he said “I’m not your dad, your dad is up ahead”.

  13. 1.Captain Wilkie is the captain of the soldiers. He is different from Sergeant Hanley because Wilkie is nice and Hanley is mean.

2.The war is not going well for The Allies’ soldiers. I know this because the Germans are winning(ish) and from Tommo’s view it doesn’t seem to be going good.

3.The problems that were in the trenches were lice, rats, mud and rain.

    4. Anna, the girl from the estaminet, reminds Tommo of Molly. Write about a time when you saw someone who reminded you of a person you know. Tell what it was about that person (not just looks) that reminded you of them. There once was a time I thought I saw someone I recognized, so I went up to her and said hi. She looked at me like I was crazy. I said that I thought she looked familiar, and then she understood.

1.Captain Wilkie is a much kinder man than Sergeant Hanley. Captain Wilkie encourages them to sing to keep their spirits high. He died from a fatal wound just after Charlie was court martialed.
2.The war is definitely not going well for the soldiers. The living conditions are very poor, they only get small amounts of food a day, and they are always stressed because at any moment, the Germans could attack or send a shell straight for them.
3.Sometimes, the trenches would collapse, and they were always flooding because of the weather so the bottom was mud. Also, when they dug the trenches, they dug them in straight lines. Then it was easy for the Germans to re aim their guns and they would get lots of direct hits.
4.When I saw Ms. Dimter at the start of the year she really reminded me of Mrs. Rosenau because she was very kind.

  16. 1.Captain Wilkie is the captain of Tommo’s and Charlie’s group. Captain Wilkie is different than Sergeant Hanley is he treats his lower officers with respect.
2.The war is not going well for anybody, but I don’t think it is going well for the French soldiers particularly. I don't think the war is going well for the French soldiers because of all the wounded soldiers Charlie and Tommo saw.
    3. The problem with the trenches was that the were straight which meant that artillery strikes were easier to aim, and also they were damp, uncomfortable and you could get trench foot.
4 A man at a building I saw someone looked like President Obama he had the same hair and looked like he was the same age and he had the same facial structure.
